Axon Research Corporation won the official commission to produce Gravity Displacement Rifles for the Steel Halo League. Designed after the Gravity Lance wielded exclusively by the Huristar, the Gravity Displacement Rifle creates a unique directional flow of gravitron particles with a variable focal length that can be shaped into conduits of localised gravity.

This allows experienced wielders to control small but powerful fields of push and pull energy. Within the sport of Steel Halo, this sees players launching and deflecting the ball, gravity jumping via a blast of push energy directed at the feet, crushing melee attacks, and the ability to pull in the ball and other players at distance.

The technology that powers the Gravity Displacement Rifles is common enough, though in the interest of not infringing Imperial patents, it is in a much weaker and cheaper form, which has led to the fashioning of several specialised models.

Overloading

Although the GDG is a weakened form of the Huristar's Gravity Lance, it by no means is less capable of delivering harm to wielder and opponent alike. In order to keep the sport of Steel Halo within safety margins set by the League, fail-safe's have been introduced into each of the GDG's to prevent harm to fellow competitors through misuse. An overload feature prevents the GDG's from superheating, which is an ugly occurrence that sees localised ambient temperature rise by as much as 400% when the repulsed gravitons effectively microwave the surrounding air. After several fatalities, the League implemented an overload function that discharges stored energy before it becomes critical.

The discharge is violent, and leaves a scorched cloud of ionised ozone that hampers visibility and causes brief put painful irritation to any who pass through it.

It is a perfectly acceptable to strategy to harm yourself by purposely overloading your GDG, and some teams actually have specialist players who routinely do so, but the sport has been tweaked to keep this kind of play to a minimum.

Cold

Another caveat to using the GDG's is the danger of freezing. Due to the amount of air that passes through a GDG using pull energy, rapid freezing is a common problem that robs careless users of their body temperature if they hold on for too long. Some unfortunate competitors have actually had their hands frozen to the barrel, and needed to visit the Vat for replacement appendages. You have been warned.
